Women who are suffering with uterine fibroids often have very painful and heavy, menstrual cramps and bleeding. Fibroids, which may grow over time, are usually addressed by either/both a prescription of pharmaceutical drugs, or surgery to remove the fibroids. Many women are unaware that TCM not only relieves the pain that accompanies your periods of heavy bleeding, but it can also effectively shrink uterine fibroids thus avoiding the need for life-changing surgery.
What Causes Uterine Fibroids?
In the TCM view, uterine fibroids are caused by an energy deficiency and stagnation of blood circulation in the body. We call this energy Qi (pronounced “chee”). Just as blood circulates throughout the entire body, Qi circulates throughout the entire body along its’ own pathways. Not having enough energy and blood circulating throughout your body can cause you to feel tired; have a pale complexion; or have anemia. This stagnation is the root cause of blood clots and painful periods.
When deficiency and stagnancy occur together, the micro circulation is partially blocked and uncirculated blood and body fluid accumulate in one spot. Over period of time, this combination creates fibroids. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine unblock the pathways, making circulation smoother and thusly the fibroids are reduced in size and are gradually eliminated with the restoration of the circulation of both Qi and blood.
The Treatment
When a patient comes in, we have a consultation and a thorough assessment. How many treatments needed depends on the size and number of the fibroids. For big uterine fibroids, it’s a once-a- week acupuncture treatment, for 13 weeks. Each acupuncture session is about 60 to 75 minutes. Herbal medicine is prescribed. After 13 sessions, you will go to an ultrasound clinic to see the results of your treatment. For smaller fibroids, the course of treatment is accordingly shorter.
For those patients who cannot take acupuncture, herbal medicine is prescribed over period of 3 to 4 months depending on the size of fibroids and the individual’s own response to the treatment. As a very important part of the treatment, we also educate patients about their diet and necessary lifestyle changes.
